The Caregiver’s Itinerary: Making the Most of Your Wait

When you drop a loved one off at Lakewalk, your “on-clock” time pauses for a bit. Since we are located right in the heart of the London Road district, you have the perfect opportunity to recharge. Here is a simple itinerary to help you navigate your wait.

Phase 1: The Quick Refresh (0–30 Minutes)

If you just want a breath of fresh air and a quick reset:

  • The Lakewalk Stroll: Head down toward the water. A 15-minute walk along the lake is the fastest way to lower your heart rate. The sound of the waves is nature’s best stress-reliever. We’re “Lakewalk” Surgery Center for a reason :).
  • The Caffeine Jumpstart: Drive or walk a few blocks down London Road. Grab a local coffee or a tea to-go.

Phase 2: The “Getting Things Done” Window (30–90 Minutes)

If you have a longer stretch and want to be productive:

  • The Mobile Office: Find a quiet corner in a nearby café. With a hot latte and your laptop or a good book, you can turn a waiting period into a productive “me-time” session.
  • Boutique Browsing: Explore the small shops nearby. It is a great time to pick up a “get well” gift, a comfortable new sweatshirt for the patient, or a candle to make their recovery space at home more relaxing.

Phase 3: The “Hero” Prep (The Final 30 Minutes)

Before we call you for discharge, do a quick lap to set the patient up for success:

  • The Recovery Meal: Stop at a local deli or cafe for a light take-out meal. Look for things like:
    • Miso or chicken noodle soup.
    • A fruit-based smoothie.
    • Light crackers or a simple sandwich.
  • Car Setup: Pull into a spot and take a moment to fluff the pillows in the passenger seat. Adjust the seat recline and make sure a blanket is within reach.

Caregiver Checklist:

  • Phone Volume: Turn your ringer on High. We want to make sure you hear us the second we call.
  • Phone Battery: Keep your phone on a charger if it is low; you will need it for coordination and the drive home.
  • Parking: Remember where you parked! If you moved to a different lot for coffee, keep your keys handy for a quick return.

Our Promise: We will call you the moment your loved one is ready. Take this time for yourself—you are going to be the “head nurse” once you get home, so enjoy the Duluth scenery while you can!
