Spring into Recovery: Tips for a Smooth Post-Surgical Experience

At Lakewalk Surgery Center, we understand how important it is for you to have a smooth post-surgical experience. Whether you’ve had orthopaedic care, help with your eyes, reconstructive services, or general surgery – recovering fully and resuming your normal activities in a safe way – is top priority.

In this blog we will address a few ways to ensure an efficient and safe recovery.

1. Follow Your Surgeon’s Instructions

This tip should go without saying, but is an important reminder. Every surgery or procedure comes with a set of specific instructions and guidelines that help ensure your successful recovery. These instructions may include restrictions on certain movements, a guide on weight-bearing activities, or incision care. Always follow these instructions carefully to avoid complications and setbacks. If you’re ever unsure, don’t hesitate to contact your care team!

2. Engage in Post-Op Care

Post-operative instructions and checkups are vital to ensuring you are healing correctly and efficiently.  Tailored programs created by your recovery team will help you with a smooth recovery. For some, continued Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT) are key components to regain strength, flexibility, and mobility in your affected area.

3. Listen to Your Body

Your body will give you cues as to when it’s time to push yourself and when it’s time to rest. If you experience pain, swelling, or discomfort, it’s important to ease up. Remember, everyone’s recovery is different, and even the smoothest recoveries take time, so it’s important to avoid rushing back into regular activities too quickly.

4. Returning to Work

Once your doctor clears you to return to work, ease back into it gradually as well. Start with lighter tasks before transitioning to more demanding responsibilities. If your job involves physical labor or extended standing, discuss modifications with your employer to help make the transition easier.

5. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is important to a successful recovery. Eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep can all support your body’s healing process. Additionally, once you have been cleared by your physician, incorporating movement and exercise back into your routine will help with overall health.

The team at Lakewalk Surgery Center is here to help you make a smooth recovery after all procedures. If you have any questions, never hesitate to reach out to your physician’s office directly!
